As children enter middle school typically characterised by a more content-rich curriculum and cognitive demands for higher level thinking, they find themselves keen to use the library 'period' as a 'free' period to browse, flip through lighter texts, burrow into and with favourite 'popular' series and indulge in peer talk. Can the library play a more determined role in the reading life of the middle school child?
In this session with veteran library professional Sujata Noronha, participants will try and understand the pivotal and transformative period in reading development that occurs during middle school and explore some strategies and approaches that draw upon the cognitive, emotional and social growth of children at this stage to support reading in the library.
